I could not finish this book (stopped about 30% in). The main character comes across as lackluster and even when she can go from standing up for herself to meek and mild, she doesn't seem to make great judgements. The pace of the story builds quickly but the action is a bit confusing and lacks proper details.

Interesting and a very smooth read

I loved this book. It just flew by with writing as smooth as silk. The characters were vivid and realistic. As such, I can't wait to read more of the series! Try it. You will not be disappointed.

There was honestly a lot that i didn't like about this book. The heroine was utterly TSTL, making the worst possible decision in every instance, and her inner narrative had the vibe of a 12 year old girl. It was irritating and eye-rolling.

But the world is interesting - the supernaturals, the Aegrus virus, the wall - and so I'm reading onward to see if Alena learns from her experiences in this book, and becomes less of an utter moron.

And I'm waiting for her to finally kill Roger. And Merlin. Because come fucking on, if you're going to be a supernatural monster, you can at least off the guys who utterly fucked you over.

fast-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Strong character development? It's complicated
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated

Narrator was great! Story was good...nothing I would ever listen to again. I was confused a lot. Like, is she going to live on the human side or not? What about the bakery?

Well the best thing is that it inspired me to listen to Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin.... which is an awesome song, so yay!

Nice, light-hearted read

A bit too much insta-love and the heroine threw off her lifelong behavior away too quickly, but enjoyable nonetheless. I'll move into the next ones as available.

Firstly I Loved the audio and the concept was really imaginative.

Im calling this down the middle not the worst book i have read but also not that great either.

I couldn't get my mind around Donkey butts super duper's and other weird words that really deflected from the story and made the lead come across as really immature and naive.

The characters had no real depth and were very one dimensional it all reminded me a bit of a 80's cartoon... Interesting enough but nothing to write home about, the narrator was brilliant kept it interesting.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing a free ebook copy of Venom & Vanilla By: Shannon Mayer in exchange for an honest review.

Short Review Summary:
Not for me at all.

Well Venom & Vanilla is not what I was expecting, and not in a good way. I made it maybe about 60-70% through before I had to give up on it. I couldn't take it seriously! Some of the things that happened are too silly to be believable. I don't care for that at all.
#UmNo

Also, I found some parts to be a bit weird and there isn't enough world building to really support the weirdness. There isn't enough depth, venom, or action in the story for me and it didn't help that I did not like the brainless MC Alena. Part of that may have been her overuse of the term "super duper," which annoyed me to no end. Or perhaps it's how thanks to her supernatural change she's so beautiful now and has longer legs...blah blah. I'm really over supernatural changes making female characters go from plain to gorgeous, especially when it's done in a cheesy way. I have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed since I was looking forward to this one so much, but it just didn't do it for me.
#NotSuperDuper

I can't personally recommend Venom & Vanilla, but if you like your urban fantasy books very vanilla then no harm in trying it!

This was a decent read, and I did find myself liking the mythology and creatures in this world. It did feel as if you weren't given enough information up front about the creatures though. Alena knew more than the reader, so it left me feeling pretty lost sometimes as the author essentially had to go back and explain what she was talking about. It wasn't a bad book, I don't love that she's the big, all-powerful big bad though. That's weird.

Good premise, annoying main character

If I never hear/read the words "good girl" in relation to a person, it'll be too soon. Hoping she grows up in the next book.
