Michelle Paver wrote my absolute favourite book series when I was a kid, The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, so I was absolutely delighted to happen upon this book in a second hand shop.
This book did not disappoint and I found I never wanted to out it down.
The style of narration is unique, with the story being told from both the perspective of a young girl, Maud, and through the journal entries of her father's that she reads.
The book is definitely slower paced, so if you prefer your books action packed this may not be the one for you.
I found it a good Gothic horror and an easy read.

Wakenhyrst is a chilling tale of madness, myths and murder, beautifully written, haunting and eloquent.

It is the beginning of the 20th century and young Maud lives at Wake's End, her family manor located right next to the fen. After her mother dies in childbirth, Maud is left alone with her brothers and her tyrannical father, Edmund Stearne. The latter seems to be slowly losing his mind as he is overtaken by a consuming obsession over an old painting he discovers at the church.

The novel starts when Maud is 96 years of age, with her father having been imprisoned years ago for the murder of a local person when Maud was still a child. As questions arise as to his guilt, the story travels back in time to reveal what actually took place.

I wasn't sure what to expect before I started reading this one but the gripping story with its gothic undertones was even better than I had hoped it would be. The sense of foreboding had me clinging on to every word and the fact that the murder victim wasn't revealed till the very end had me on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who it would be.

OMFG IT'S AMAZING WTF!

Actual review to come.

Spanning five centuries, Wakenhyrst is a darkly Gothic thriller about murderous obsession and one girl's longing to fly free. "

This was a delicious novel. Beginning with Maud our protagonist in 1967 when she is 69. She needs money for the upkeep of her childhood home the Mansion Wakes End... So after years of silence she has agreed to allow a reporter access to the "sort after" notebook of her infamous father Edmund Stern(this man has turned me into a full blown feminist).... And so we are taken back to Wakes End 1906 ...on the edge of a bleak Fen near the town of Wakenhyrst.
The story is told from Maud's memories and from her father's notebook... Omg what a complete tosser that man is!!

I loved this novel. Any book that about a chatterpie and a fen dwelling character called Juble Rede was inevitably going to be ace! Spooky and atmospheric with twists and turns and cunning, wonderful and lovable characters this book has everything and more.

I would massively recommend this as a wonderful spooky read for the up and coming witching season!

I listened to this on audible and the narrative by #juanitamcmahon

This is my second Michelle Paver book and I received this as an ARC copy from net galley but I think i read a different book to the one everyone else is reviewing. I found the whole thing stolid, there was a lack of action / narrative and evocation. It could have been set anywhere for me there was little of the fens in it and far too much about chatterpies. I really could not get into any rhythm reading it and neither did I or horror at all. I think me and this author are about done as the last book I read left me feeling disappointed too.
