7/10. Full marks for setting and creepy vibe. I really enjoyed the subtext in Maud's experience of how difficult it was to be a woman/girl at the turn of the 20th century. I enjoyed everything about the way this was written and loved the author's afterword explaining a lot of the inspiration for the story. The thread of a psychiatric patient being compelled to create art but also being terrified by their own creation is fascinating. While this was well-written I found it difficult to read the portions from Edmund Stearn's journal entries. The story wouldn't have worked if he hadn't been so pompous and unlikable but I couldn't wait to get back to Maud's narrative. I will definitely be perusing this author's past works for future reads.

Not as spooky as Dark Matter or Thin Air, and felt more like a family drama than a ghost story, but I still really enjoyed this. Beautifully written and very dark.

My only major disappointment was the ending, which felt predictable and depressing. I was waiting for a twist, and actually got an anti climax.

Overall, worth it for the first ninety percent of the novel.

5 out of 5 stars
I absolutely loved reading this. Every little twist and turn was enjoyable, the writing was simple, and I honestly loved every minute. I felt like the narrative was well thought out and the characters were rounded out. Definitely something I recommend others to read.

Pedantic and dry. Did not finish.

Well written, atmospheric, but somehow contrives to be less than the sum of its parts.
