Probably my least favorite Inspector Evan Evans mystery. Although I did like the inclusion of the tape recorded story interjected throughout, I was disappointed, however, that 1) no one ever discovered this priceless painting and 2) that the fighter plane was never raised.

This Constable Evans book is a little bit different. There are passages that are a scenes from the past, narrated as memories of a character. It was a big portion of the book and although I can't say it interrupted the flow, it did change the normal feel of the books. We simply didn't see as much if the characters, especially Evan, as we're used to seeing. The mystery wasn't too predictable or anything and was enjoyable aside from these "memories." I don't normally care for backflashes in writing and it didn't win me over here. I probably would have rated the book higher otherwise.

I really enjoyed this Evan book. The mines added a sinister factor to the cozy. I enjoyed that Bronwen got some more depth. And the historical aspect to this mystery was fun. Definitely a surprise ending!

I mentioned this author and her Constable Evans books as read-alikes for M.C. Beaton's Hamish Macbeth books, but I had never actually read any of Bowen's Constable Evans books. I decided to fix this, and it was a good decision. I can now say from personal experience that the Constable Evans books are definitely good read-alike suggestions for those who liked the Hamish Macbeth books. In this particular book, Evan Evans has the annoying task of watching out for a bunch of people filming a documentary about the recovery of a WWII plane. The most insufferable of the documentary people is murdered, and Evan must figure out who did it.
SpoilerThe case ends up being tied to a bit of local history about some paintings that had been hidden in the slate mines during WWII.

Documentary filmmakers arrive in Wales bringing all kinds of screwy issues with them. When the producer--whom everyone found at least annoying--is found murdered in a local mine, his friends are the first suspects. But the truth goes back 60 years, and our favorite Constable figures it all out in the end. Of course.
