Read this for my book club, and I hate to say it but if it wasn’t for said book club, I would have DNFed. I wasn’t a big fan of the story jumping around back and forth between Rue’s childhood and adulthood. I get that it was meant to build anticipation but it just caused confusion. I found myself just not really paying attention and often getting lost as to what part of the story we were at.

This book also has so much black pain as its focus, and I was really just waiting for these characters to get some kind of reprieve. I read books with heavy topics all the time, but there was no balance here, just pain on top of pain for every character. Like when you think things can’t get worse, they get worse. 😕

Beautiful writing and a compelling story with symbolism that doesn't feel forced. Sometimes it felt just a bit slower than I would have liked it to be to build up suspense, but overall a great book. No character is pure good or pure evil, and it gives a bit of insight into what it would be like to live around the time before, during, and after the Civil War on a plantation.

There was something missing from this book. Conjure Woman is one of those books where you know how it’s going to end from the beginning.

You know Rue’s Dad was lynched. You know Rue’s mom dies of a broken heart. You know the plantation is burned down

. These are all things you learn within the first couple chapters of the book. Conjure Woman is the story of HOW we got there. And what comes in. It’s a book that gives you an outline right away, then paints the picture with very intricate colors. I’m not a fan of this style of writing. Some parts are written in AAVE as well, which made it a little hard for me to understand at first, but after the first couple chapters with some solid AAVE, I got it :) Overall, it was a good book... but disappointing.
