This book is beautiful. It’s painted so well with a mix of magic and reality. Afia follows tangled roots of stories in a way that both acknowledges their complexity and keeps connections and plot clear to follow.

I think I just expected something different when I went into it and to see actual magic. I also didn’t understand the point of putting May’s chapters in first person. There were also some sloppy points during the end. The book was emotional and complex but in the end I think it just didn’t hit for me.

I thought this story was told beautifully and was really well-executed. I liked how the bulk of the story takes place in the immediate aftermath of the Civil War. It was really interesting to see how much changed for these people, but still how much was the same.
