It’s funny, sometimes before I read a book I check the reviews to see what others thought of it. Sometimes I agree and sometimes I shake my head because the reviews show that the reader went in expecting something this book never promised to be.
With “What I Never Get Over You”, I ended up disagreeing with the critics. I really enjoyed this book, maybe more than the previous Paige Toon books I’ve read.
Here’s the thing: this book is classified as a romance, and in being so I went into reading this expecting a few things. I expected my HEA, I expected some classic romance tropes, and I expected, wait for it….some cheesy romance. This book delivers on all of them!
The main couple, Ash and Ellie, are right out of University when they first meet while interrailing through Europe. Both lonely, they find company with each other and more as they spend time together, but through various circumstances lose contact for 6 years, when they see each other again. Both of them are in different places in their life, and while their lives don’t necessarily fit, their connection is still there. Can they navigate their differences to find a way to each other is the question.
I kind of liked Ellie and Ash. Yes, sometimes they did or said something that made me want to yell at them, but in a way where I was invested in their story and their relationship. Their juxtaposition of responsibilities worked for me and the story. I struggled putting this book down, and when I did I continued thinking of what might come next, and at least for me that’s what I go into a book hoping will happen…that the words on the page will activate my imagination and keep me thinking and CARING about what could happen next.
This book isn’t the most complex prose, so if you’re looking for that, you will be disappointed. The twenty-somethings act like twenty-somethings and talk like twenty-somethings. I wound’t call this YA for that reason as I don’t think any romance really fits that definition. One thing I appreciated about this book more than others is that in the last few PT books I’ve read, there’s been a more tragic obstacle that the couple needs to work through which, to be honest, has been a bit of a buzzkill on my way to my HEA. I didn’t feel that way with this book, and I liked that.
I am giving this book 4.5 stars because, at least for me, it gave me everything it advertised it would be, and I finished it feeling pretty satisfied. If you’ve read Paige Toon before or you like a good romance book, I think this book would be right up your alley.
**Thank you so much to Netgalley, Penguin Group Putnam and Paige Toon for the opportunity to read this book in advance in exchange for my honest opinion. I appreciate the opportunity!!**
