Obsessed

I started this as a buddy read after searching for something with Folk of Air vibes, and it did not disappoint!
The plot reminded me at times of a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the characters reminiscent of some personal favorites found in SJMs books, and all in all this shot to my top ten list.

Made it about 2 thirds of the way through this book before giving up. The author had the potential to craft a beautiful story but lost me with the slow pace and excessively descriptive (not even sure how to describe the writing style...). I found myself lost and not sure what was going on a lot of the time due to the writing style.

Let it be known that this was a book I greatly wanted to like. I didn't go in with any expectations, other than knowing it had vivid purple prose.

Well, good god did this book have purple prose.

Now, let me be clear. I love purple prose. Give me a novel that is lyrical descriptions and poem made form, and I will eat that s*** up. For example, I adore Laini Taylor's books. I love it, therefore, I was expecting to survive this one just fine.

I was wrong.

The second I got to chapter 2, the book was almost indecipherable. I thought I was going insane. A book that I should've been able to crunch in under 2 days took a whole week because I had to keep rereading passages because I thought I was going crazy. English is my first language and yet I was so confused—I swear to you, words were being misused. I managed to push through to the end, and I'll be honest it was better near the end, but not by much. There were paragraphs that felt like the eye of the hurricane, where I forgot, briefly, how bad the rest of the prose was. And then I'd get slapped back to reality in the next paragraph.

Maybe the most insane part of this was the overuse of the word "digits". It was once used twice in a single paragraph. Digits was said more than fingers in the entire book, I promise you. Tragically, I have a physical copy and not a digital one, so I can't ctrl+f to figure out how many times it was used (If someone with the kindle edition could tell me, I'd love to know). Another wattpad favourite was also present, because "orbs" was volleyed a few times. I actually often like to keep a tally of how many times orbs was used in a book, but I didn't this go around. Regardless, it must have been at least 4 times.

Aside from the purple prose that was lacking in its lyricism, I despised whatever accent the fmc—Lark—was given. She was the only character with that accent, and it was very country-esque? But not in a charming way. Rural but like, more Tom Sawyer and less nice-lady-from-Georgia-who-bakes-you-a-pie. Fun fact: I've never cared for the word "panties", but Lark saying "knickers" made me appreciate it. This did not bode well for the two or so sex scenes.

If there's one thing that makes me feel guilty, it's giving an indie/self-pubbed author a low rating, but I cannot in good conscience score this higher than a 2 star read. By no means is it a 1 star, however, because I've rated a few books that low and I know I enjoyed this more than those.

Well, you might be asking, "Ange, what did you enjoy?"

To which I say, "Excellent question!"

I didn't hate the plot concept. It was neat, honestly. Just not as well done as it could have been. There were lots of cool ideas, but honestly, as the setting is Faerie, it's not like I can give too much credit for the whimsical nature of it. Faerie has existed for so long across various mythos, so it's not something Jaster created entirely herself. Therefore, I can only give so many points for it. I also didn't hate Cerulean (the love interest), I just felt he was a tad flat.

And, yes, I have the Fae Crate boxed set, so I will finish this series eventually. Fingers crossed it's better without Lark as the main character. Just...I don't know, keep me in your thoughts while I subject myself to this.

I started this book after reading the review of another fellow reader. And I don't regret.

first book i read that isn't that long ass series and tbh i'm about to go bak to it bc this book was like eh i thought it was gonna be like the glittering court w the same events happening but different characters and perspectives and it kinda is w different sisters and thier journey but they don't even reunite at the end and i love reunion scenes so i felt like that was a missed opportunity but it's probably gonna be seen in the last book. the beginning of this book was so boring like i could barely read 20 pages for one day like i wasn't into it and it took like 150 pages for me to get into it kinda and i like the ending ish but idk it was just so boring and i felt like the details were unneccessary or like too much yk this book was tryna be like the cruel prince but it didn't have the fucking good shit lol. i liked when there was the flashback scene bc it was a cute memory and usuaolly i don't like them so that's nice but idk i felt like the relationship was kinda boring bc the authro just say they talk about stuff but doesn't write out their conversations which i'm like ugh. the main girl kinda annoys me and omg the second hand embarrassment i got from this one part i had to stop reading omg but she's just so idk ugh. my fav character was the side character named moth she was literally the best she had the best personality and was mean but had a soft side yk you just need to get used to her and everything and i love her sm i would read a book about her. the main guy wasn't too bad ig he was just not really someone i'm attached to like i'm attached to none of the characters besides moth and the adopted dad of the girls. idk if i wanna read the secdond book tho like i'll read the beginning but if i'm not into it i'm stopping and going back to this other series wirtten by the author who wrote the 15 book series bc that series is connectd to it yup. anyways rating a 6/10 just not feeling it i was really hoping i liked it bc i saw good fanart for it yk lmao just remembered i found this book while in the school bahtroom tryna leave junior sem.

I read a review from someone else that used the definition “purple prose” and I couldn’t figure out how to put into words that the writing was so bad. If you don’t know what purple prose is:

“is overly embellished language that serves little meaningful purpose in a piece. It’s characterized by strings of multisyllabic words, run-on sentences, and blocks of unyielding text. Universally discouraged by all manner of writing experts, purple prose slows the pace, muddles the content, and can lose the reader entirely.”

The writing it had me DNFing this book twice. I physically could not get through it. I consider myself a pretty fast reader & this really shouldn’t have taken me as long as it did. I even loved the plot for this book. I thought the world building was decent. I liked the main characters and felt they were interesting. I even loved the ending. But I could not sit through and read all of the text I found myself skipping long chunks of info dumping and getting to the dialogue because it was just too much!

I honestly wouldn’t even know where to begin to describe back to you without spoiling anything the plot of this book. Seems like this might be how the rest of them are written which is a shame because I’m intrigued how the other sisters faired in the challenge. I did read this on kindle unlimited so I’m glad I didn’t buy it because I’ll never read it again.

This book I read in my cursed month of terrible books so I never really had high hopes.

This just went on and on. The story just was so overly described I wanted it to finish. I was so tempted to DNF the book but I kept sticking by it thinking it might get better. Which it did but not enough that I felt I could read the sequel.

The plot - absolutely fantastic.
The writing - absolutely time consuming and terrible for anyone prone to distraction.

I kept putting it down after a few word of description which meant I put this book down every two seconds. Seriously, this book contains more purple prose than any other book I’ve read. It was just too much description, and I love description as it helps me imagine the world and scenarios but this book had too much, to the point where I couldn’t imagine things and I skipped over some words.

This was really a shame as I absolutely loved the plot as it was just so unique and creative and I even loved the main characters and their relationship from childhood to adulthood. It was just unfortunate that the wrong for me really did not work.

Really enjoyed this! It really did feel like I was reading a whimsical dark fairytale. Not only did I love the enemies to lovers romance, I really liked that Lark and her sisters share a really close bond with each other. Can’t wait to see what awaits Juniper in the next book!
