Laatste deel gebladerd, het boeide me niet meer. Het is knap, prachtige taal, maar ik was niet geboeid door het plot en de relaties in het plot.

I can’t help it, but I definitely got the impression that Tommy Wieringa wanted to measure himself here with Harry Mulisch (1927-2010), the self-proclaimed prince of Dutch Literature. ‘Nirvana’ is an ambitious novel that addresses various themes: the history of the Netherlands, love, art, the act of being a writer, the rising populism and the rising woke-ism and other current issues, etc. And the author regularly strikes a pedantic tone, putting the artistic scene and the milieu of literary critics in their place, exactly as we know from Mulisch.
The ingredients that Wieringa works with are quite interesting: the collaboration and its concealment, the brutal capitalist opportunism, the emptiness of artistic hypes, the trauma of cold parenthood for a sensitive soul, the fundamental loneliness of the individual, and so on.
But the mayonnaise didn’t work, at least not for me. Grandfather Adema and his hypocritical past, yes, that is quite well presented, and grandson Hugo's struggle with his place in the family, his great desire for love and recognition, that is also quite something. And that the author himself, Tommy Wieringa, plays a remarkable role in this novel (not an ordinary cameo) is a nice gimmick, for a while anyway, but after a while it becomes a bit annoying. But then you've had it. That whole cosmological framework, with the struggle of all-destroying fire (capitalism, climate crisis) versus mystical nirvana, is not convincing. The references to populism, radical right and woke-ism (very surprised to find themselves in each other's company) are preachy and cheap. Especially the female characters in this novel (beloved Loïs, ex-governess Beth) are problematically weak. And in the same breath I will also mention the sex scenes: they are simply banal. And stylistically this book is also very inconsistent: beautifully written scenes alternate with absolutely substandard ones. No, this was not worthy of Mulisch. And with that, this book illustrates once again the hypocrisy in literary criticism in the Netherlands, which almost unanimously praised this novel.
Een perfect opgezet boek over hoe het oorlogsverleden ook twee generaties later nog een rol kan spelen. Leuk detail is dat Wieringa zelf ook een rol speelt, zij het een (kleine) bijrol. Ook uit eerdere boeken van hem komen details terug, zoals een hele reeks verwijzingen naar kauwen, die ook in Joe Speedboot zaten. Een fijne schrijfstijl in combinatie met een sterk plot maken dit tot een van Wieringa's beste boeken. Misschien wel zijn beste.

In de trein tijdens het interrailen gelezen :) het eerste boek dat ik van Tommy Wieringa heb gelezen, maar ik denk dat er meer volgen want ik vond het een heel goed boek

Een worsteling dit boek, ik hou van Tommy Wieringa maar dit boek kon me niet bekoren. De premisse is ontzettend veelbelovend en ik keek er erg naar uit, maar alle door politiek doorspekte overpeinzingen van de hoofdpersoon maakt het voor mij te gekunsteld.
Wieringa die zichzelf als personage opvoert vond ik daarentegen erg grappig en daar had absoluut meer van in mogen zitten. Evenals meer van de overpeinzingen van de hoofdpersoon over zijn grootvader en diens al dan niet bestaande verzetsdaden.
Een veelbelovend boek, maar kwam voor mij niet goed genoeg uit de verf.

3,5 *. Ik keek naar Nirwana uit, misschien daarom dat het toch wat teleurstelt. Dit boek wil veel zijn: familie-epos, historische duiding, maatschappelijke commentaar, kunstbeschouwing ..., waardoor één en ander misschien wat veel aan de oppervlakte blijft. Vaak heel goed geschreven, soms flirtend met de grens van het pompeuze en af en toe daarover. Toch nog altijd het lezen waard.
