Blijkbaar ben ik dit boek gestart met verkeerde verwachtingen: ik had verwacht dat het veel meer over opa zou gaan, maar het bleek meer over Hugo te gaan. Heb me alsnog prima vermaakt, een aantal mooie stukken, maar het is het toch niet helemaal. Het is een familiegeschiedenis en een beetje een historische fictie/oorlogsverhaal, waarbij ik dus meer van het laatste had verwacht. Het duurde ook behoorlijk lang voor ik een connectie voelde met Hugo, namelijk toen het over zijn pleegmoeder ging. Daarnaast vraag ik mij af of Wieringa's schrijfstijl helemaal mijn ding is; teveel aan beeldspraak en soms raakte het mis bij mij. Ben daar wel nieuwsgierig naar dus denk zeker wel dat ik nog eens een boek van hem oppak.

Jeetje wat een indrukwekkend boek! Prachtig hoe de geschiedenis en het nu verworven worden. Kan er de woorden verder nog niet voor vinden om het te omschrijven, moet het nog even laten bezinken.
* Ik stel mijn review wat bij. Het laatste hoofdstuk had voor mij anders gemogen en de taal was passend bij de context, maar soms ook onnodig “moeilijk”.

Started reading this book a few days ago, only added it to Storygraph just now because I need a place to vent.
The book sucks ass. The main character Hugo is the unlikeable grandson of a Dutch nazi, and even though Hugo is questioning the story his family has always told about his grandfather’s role in WWII, he still gives himself the grace he doesn’t offer others, for example the part about political islam? You can’t fit the entire history of this movement into a few sentences, allude to the Twin Towers and Bin Laden and throw in “Muslim” extremism, all based on a Western, imperialistic and capitalistic view which ignores the politics in the Middle-East entirely, and without a thoughtfull explanation this leads to the writer painting all muslims as terrorists and extremists. And then hate on a female critic who actually has very good points about Hugo never denouncing his grandfathers past, using German titles for his paintings and having a preference for futurism, which preceded fascims. It’s valid criticism when your grandfather was proven to be a nazi and your family still benefits from this!
The story wants to be so much more than it should be, that it doesn’t go in depth in a few important topics and it shows the ignorance of the writer and his main character.
Did not finish and would not recommend.
