I finished The Mysterious Affair at Styles (Hercule Poirot 1), by Agatha Christie. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Arthur Lane. A great deal of this book is Poirot explaining what happened. I would have enjoyed it more if there was more "showing" and not so much "telling".

I listened to this through a podcast on Spotify called Phoebe Reads a Mystery.

I admit it took me quite longer to finish this than I did the Sherlock Holmes ones, but only because I have a less imaginative mind and had to restart the thing when I realized that the narrator wasn’t actually a woman hahaha. Very very amateur mistake. I only know Hercule Poirot from Tumblr posts, and vaguely at that. He is one of the detectives which I will add to my list of “kind detectives I stan”, you may look at the rest of the list on my review of the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

I think it’s perfect that this was narrated from the point of view of Arthur Hastings, a very obnoxious character albeit endearing in his cluelessness. I hadn’t predicted the ending at all and had my own conjectures, I am nicely surprised by how it all adds up. As much as I want to be a smart girlTM, I actually really like detective novels that explains every little bit of everything that has been unveiled so simply and so clearly because I am dumbAF.

I revisited this as part of Read Christie 2024, as it was the official January selection. I evidently didn't enjoy it too much the first time through, and my rating remains the same this time. Part of the problem is Hastings. Also, I think the humor and pace are both better in later books. Still, how good it is that Agatha Christie got her start here... and then kept going!
