Fascinating, beautiful writing. The narrator is a little dramatic..

I can't fathom how two women's lives are chronicled throughout this book. The author took us through the starting point of her two aunt's lives, to where they accidentally separated for three decades, to where they were determined at the end to meet again. I loved how each girl's dreams and hopes were described, and how we were able to see how their dreams and their lives changed as they grew up. It really makes me wonder how my parents feel when they return home to China to visit their families, and what they feel on those trips. I really really enjoyed this book and being able to see how China's history has shaped the lives and experiences of many people.
Moderate: Classism, Death, Genocide, Miscarriage, Sexism, Abortion, Child death, Death of parent, Grief, Medical content, Rape, Pregnancy, War, and Cancer
Minor: Infertility

I listened to the audiobook and it was such a fast listen. The true stories of these two sisters and all that they each accomplished in their circumstances are amazing and inspiring. Definitely recommended.

Although I wish it was written in a more historical fiction style, it is an amazing story of 2 sisters. I think reading about Communisim in practice is important. Author really tries to be fair to both women which is also great.
