This book reminded me of my home and all the little things I've forgotten. I loved how Penkov weaved a beautiful story of history and the present, and of my homeland of Bulgaria.
Beautiful, just beautiful. Thank you for this gift.

I absolutely loved read this book. Penkov's prose is like poetry - sweet to read, elaborate in its descriptions, rich in the metaphors and full of longing. I loved every story in this collection, each story reminded me of my love for home.
Before reading one of Penkov's stories in another anthology, I hadn't known that Bulgaria had such a complicated history with Turkey and Cold War. Beyond Sofia, I hadn't known about the wilderness and the mountains. This book taught me about all this, and gave me a well rounded perspective, beyond the single voiced one that I always try to escape.

Strongly recommend this book !

Awesome short stories. Just enough information on the Ottoman occupation of the Balkans to help you start understanding the region. Hilarious accounts of Bulgaria and Bulgarians during and after communism. The author is an excellent story teller—the stories are so good they HAVE to be real, or at least inspired by real events.
