i will begin this review in saying that i am not a huge fan of poetry. though, i was attracted to this collection because i was born and raised in the bay area and was hoping i would find enjoyment in connecting with these author's experiences. i really love the idea of putting a bunch of different poets into one book. the multiple styles were refreshing. though, the substance of each poem was lackluster imo and i could only relate to maybe 3 poems overall. not saying a poem should be relatable to be good, but that's what i like. i believe it's because out of all the poets in the collection, only like 2 or 3 were POC. which, i find ridiculous in a book about oakland. but again, maybe this just wasn't for me.
