I wanted to give up early on, but told myself I'd give it until the end of the first third. It picked up right around 1/3 of the way through, and wound up being better than I had expected.

I am typically pretty good about guessing how a book proceeds next and this one caught me off guard a few different times in an enjoyable way. The clues were typically there if I took the time to think about it. The book is fast-paced which I appreciate for a book that only has one character's POV the entire time.

The beginning is super slow and the plot kinda feels all over the place, esp with all the little storylines and characters to follow. I do think it picks up towards the end.
I dunno if this book really knows what it is - the school stuff, romance drama felt incredibly immature in comparison to the royal politics that is being played out. It didn't mesh well for me.

Jude grew on me a lot. At first I wasn't too sure about her because I didn't really understand her brain. I still don't fully get her but I liked her a lot more towards the end, shes more layered than you think initially. I'm interested to see the plot goes but it didn't really grab me? Idk.

With Cardan, I get I can see how people like him. I didn't really vibe with the bully shit, idk it made everything feel so childish.
He hates her because he's attracted to her stooooop. That "boys pulling girls ponytail because he likes her" stuff is such an ick

I think the stuff with Taryn could've been interesting if written a bit better.
I did like when Jude said "I get why he chose her. I just wish she had chosen me." I found that sad, but Jude kinda forgave Taryn too easily. I think that's in Jude's character, since she has soft spots for her siblings and she seems to be a forgiving person, but I don't think it felt that satisfying.

With Mardoc, I think the concept of loving the man who murdered your parents is interesting, but it didn't come across that well? Like I'm being told that their relationship is complex but I don't totally see how it is. I'm being told not shown it. Also, is his betrayal of Dain really that shocking? He literally murdered 2 people and kidnapped 3 children like c'mon now.

I love the story. The human being dragged to fae land to live. The story line was intriguing enough from the start for me to continue reading. I love how the writer is descriptive of the world they are building but not to the point of losing the plot.

Some authors would write pages of descriptions and I would be lost about what the plot is. I love the way they write. Few sentences and then move on to the plot. Love the twist and turns though I suspected most of them before it happened.

BookTok was right about this book. It was good and I enjoyed it.

While the majority of this book was quite boring, I still enjoyed it. There was a pretty good amount of world building. There are also so many times you wil roll your eyes at what the MC does. The romance portions didn't land for me since lI'm not the target audience and made me consider not finishing the book. This is a decent fairy story meant for young adults (mostly teen girls), so temper your expectations if you aren't in that category. There is a lot that adults (with even the smallest amounts of romantic experience) will find annoying but for some reason books are still trying to teach young girls that if a boy is mean to you it's fine because he secretly likes you.
