dreamy and sad, not your typical dystopian read but this one benefits immensely from that. extremely atmospheric in a way I really enjoyed. I could see this not being for everyone though.

3.5. Nice writing, slow pacing (a trend of this author it seems). Was promised a page turning tear jerker, this was not that.

Spoiler free review.

Here is the first sentence/paragraph of chapter 12 from pg 138 of my copy that shows why I am not a fan of this book:

“I want to talk about the Norfolk trip, and all the things that happened that day, but I’ll first have to go back a bit, to give you the background and explain why it was we went.”

4 provisional rating...I think I liked how the movie revealed the central plot point better, however it was a long time ago so I need to rewatch.

The book is good and I loved the writing style. I disliked how the characters behaved but I believe that's the point of the story. The indoctrination and acceptance of their fate.

I need to think about this book more. I may come back and change this review.

Edit.

After a few hours if thinking...I'm upgrading my review to 5 stars.
The book has made me think about friendship, the need to conform and why the characters behave the way they do. It says much about mortality.

“it’s a shame, kath, because we’ve loved each other our whole lives. but in the end, we can’t stay together forever.” that quote slapped in the face and called me a whore!

but in all seriousness i think that this book could have been sadder than it was! the premise has the potential to be so sad and so dark and it just didn’t go there. it’s like sad, but it didn’t hit me, ya know, i just feel like there could have been more. the way i can explain it is it’s like if i were watching someone else grieve. i know what they’re experiencing is sad, but i’m not experiencing it myself so i can’t feel the whole scope of it. that’s what this book felt like— i KNEW it was sad but i couldn’t FEEL the sadness, i couldn’t fully connect to it. it felt empty.
i think maybe it’s the fact that they’re all so resigned to their fates, which in a way does make it sadder because they don’t see a way out, so why fight it? but on the other hand it just makes it so that you can’t truly tell how they feel about their lives, about how they have no control over them or their bodies. and i wish we got more of them discussing how truly heartbreaking it is that they never got to live a normal life because of the fact that they’re not seen as real people.
there were some really great moments and i loved tommy (especially tommy, my love) and kathy, their moments together clearly being the shining stars of the book, but it was overall average.
i feel i will like the movie more because andrew garfield plays tommy and he is in his remus lupin get up <3
