The deal: Maeve Higgins is a comedian and podcaster. This is a series of her essays, about everything from immigration to shelter dogs. I heard about it on Forever 35, where she was a guest.
.
Is it worth it?: Sure. While not exactly life-changing, Higgins has a ton of range, and there’s definitely something for everyone. In short, I’d call it cute and smart.
.
Pairs well with: exasperation with the U.S. visa process, butter, a dress from Rent The Runway
.

Sweet, thoughtful. Her essays on immigration are excellent and very serious. I preferred them to some of the lighter stuff.

I wanted like this more. I loved her essay on using Rent the Runway. Her essays on immigration were wonderful. The rest of the book just reminded me of how different I am, at 44, from Millenials. I felt she went on a little too long about herself, and I found myself skimming some parts because it got a little redundant. I love Instagram, too, but I don’t need to read an essay about someone else’s reasons for using it. She’s a good writer and she is funny, it just felt like there weren’t enough solid ideas to warrant a whole book.

Maeve's narration is sweet and endearing. I loved her perspective on immigration that is rarely captured and appreciated her sensitivity about the history of this country. It is light and deep and fun all at once.

Took me a while to get into the rhythms of her writing, but was completely charmed by the end.
Particularly liked the essay about being an aunt without children. And the one about her immigration podcast. Oh, and the one about New York in the Summer!

I love Maeve on WWDTM and really wanted to enjoy this more. I liked about half of the essays. The others felt meandering or dragged on.

Just wasn’t feeling it. The first two essays/stories felt pointless.
