such a gem among high fantasies. I'd like for the characters to have more distinct voices, but that's literally my only note. loved it even more than the priory

a great time filler. 20 hour read. fun while reading, can’t recall anything in the book. super long, could’ve been shorter. once again, Samantha Shannon likes to have something super simple to wrap up her long drawn out book

Fabulous world building, characters, and plot. Everything you want from a brick of epic fantasy. I loved the look at what duty and devotion to country/the collective means for each of these characters, and what it means to escape the oppressive parts of this cycle. Glorian needing to submit her body and womb to be part of an unending chain, Dumai trying to find a way to escape the petty politics, Tunuva balancing personal growth with her devotion to her community, Wulf struggling with the missing parts of his identity, all of it was so good.

i went into this book with really high expectations because i loved priory, and it somehow managed to exceed them. the world feels so lush and fleshed out with the new countries that were important here, the characters are compelling (even the minor characters), and the plots were interwoven really nicely. the pacing is better than priory overall; i'd say this reads a lot like a Stormlight Archives book where the first 2/3 are an even mix between plot and character development and then the last third is just all action all the time. i also really loved how diverse the world felt, and how casually it was handled.
i loved it, i'll read literally anything Samantha Shannon decides to write in this world

  • Seriously amazing characters
  • Political intrigue
  • Dragons and magic
  • Sapphic romance

The true definition of an epic sweeping high fantasy. Going into this I basically only knew two things: sapphic and dragons. I would've liked to get more dragons, but I feel as if that might be coming in Priory. I have not read TPOTOT yet as I decided to do this prequel first. I think because of that I had to get all the world building out of the way and it took about 200+ pages before I felt like I wasn't constantly referencing maps/character lists (tho I SUPER appreciate them being included). There are a lot of background characters and it takes a bit to get settled into the main POVs, but all the main characters are all just scrumptious. Truly hard to pick a favorite (although personally are Glorian and Dumai). I look forward to reading Priory next month (one 800+ pg book per month is all I can handle)!

I was originally gonna rate this 4.75 stars but I just cannot stop thinking about it, so it's 5 stars.
