...he suddenly asked himself: 'What if my entire life, my entire conscious life, simply was not the real thing?'
The urge to buy a batterned and bruised second hand copy of this book so I can underline every single gut wrenching, horrific line and slowly rock myself back and forth as I grapple with my own mortality at 4 am.

Uhhhh…. I can get why this is well thought of from the final chapters. But the bulk of the book is a boring slog Of being told what the main character’s life was like. It’s less a story than a summary of a story with an interesting denouement.

Kick in the face reading this during late stage capitalism.
I kept waiting for a ramp up— I suppose I should have known it would be a slow march to death (literally). It was a slow decline that mirrored the poor illness rattling Ivan Ilych and subsequently his family and acquaintances, too. The description of his mental anguish superseded that of his physical pain. I really appreciated seeing an outside perspective of Ivan Ilych prior to zooming in and seeing his life and death. Ivan Ilych struggling to figure out how to handle his medical diagnosis and his constant moving from giving up and wanting to die/being afraid of dying/thinking about and rejecting the hypothesis that he did not live his life well versus wondering about the state of his organs (his floating kidney and how that may be fixed).
I do think the pacing of this book was a bit weird— I should have sat down and read it all at once I think. I didn't like breaking it apart into chunks and felt like I was almost skimming at times— this may be a book that I need to reread with a physical copy and annotations. Either way this book highlighted to me the importance of compassion and patience for patients.
I'm looking forward to reading a nonfiction book next— being mortal is the next one on the chopping block!

I don’t have the words to describe what I feel for this book, I thought it was beautiful in the end when at first I found it quite a bore. A great quick read that touched me.
