this isn't usually the kind of book i'd read, but one of my students recommended it to me so I gave it a try. mostly, I just don't get the hype. I think it's a good book, I can see its merit, but i also think it ain't that deep , you know. like a man who has lived his life according to what society and well-to-do people think then realizes that he wasted his life and dies. idk it just wasn't that groundbreaking for me. but maybe it was at the time it was written.

I'll be the first to admit that I went into this story thinking it would be dense and dark, an incomprehensible mess of classic literature. I've never sat down with any Tolstoy before, and have certainly never attempted War and Peace. And yet not knowing what War and Peace is actually about, it was still absorbed into my subconscious how long it is. I mean, I've never even clapped eyes on the book. Yet, my assumptions were made--and how surprised I was to find Tolstoy so..... readable!
I listened to The Death of Ivan Ilych in audiobook. I had barely made it through the first chapter before being surprised by the lightness and the humor. Where was the dreary and sonerous tone I expected?? For a book written in 1886, I found it so very understandable and relatable--and that, in my mind, is the true mark of a classic.
In essence this is a story that has meaning for us all. This is the story about poor Ivan Ilych--a man who finds that he has not truly lived only when faced with his death. This is a somber story about a man's suffering, but it is so well written that it reads easily and well. It seems weird and morbid to say that I enjoyed this story, and yet I did. Tolstoy, I tip my hat to you. Maybe one day I'll attempt War and Peace after all..... ;)

Ik las De Dood van Ivan Iljitsj in het kader van mijn lessen Literatuur en Zorg aan de UGent. In het verleden deed ik meerdere pogingen om iets te lezen van Russische schrijvers, maar altijd zonder succes. Het deed me altijd wat somber, zelfs fatalistisch aan. Mijn jeugdige zelf kon daar niet door kijken.
Om begrijpelijke redenen is deze novelle een klassieker binnen de medical humanities: het gaat over ziekte en dood en hoe je daar als mens mee omgaat, alle stadia van verwerking incluis (de angst, de hoop, het verdriet, het berouw, de onzekerheid en de eenzaamheid). Tolstoj schetst ook niet zo'n fraai beeld van artsen. Voor artsen in opleiding is het een voorbeeld van hoe het niet moet. Maar ook los van die context is dit een ontzettend sterk, tijdloos boek. Tolstoj vertolkt op een magistrale manier de fysieke én mentale lijdensweg van Ivan Iljitsj. Uit in een wip, maar vol betekenis en inzichten.

the narrator for the romanian audiobook is brilliant. made me really enjoy listening to this novella.
Несколько лет назад я прочитала этот роман в переводе, а вчера вдруг решила попробовать прочесть в оригинале. Вместе с тем, как рассказчик аудиокниги в Ютубе прочитывал (это для меня огромная помощь с пониманием интонации и произношения) я читала текст. Вышло так, что я совсем по-другому поняла суть, чем в первом чтении на английском. Богатую прозу Толстого ведь надо получать как правильно, прямо из источника!
