This was a very Tolstoy kind of book. It is very wrapped up in the mind of a single character, but it deeply about what it means to live in a society of other people and how human interactions affect what you think about yourself. What does it mean to live a good life and what does it mean to appear that you have? These are the core questions here and I love Tolstoy for asking them.
I think Camus was heavily influenced by this book...
