I read because it's assigned reading for my daughter's HS IB program. I'm glad it was short. It isn't bad, and even though it's set in the 1800's, change a few details and it could easily be set in the present in the U.S.. Not so much has changed.

My friend won’t read this because I described it as “awful” so he necessarily thinks it is sad. I would not describe Ivan Ilyich’s death as sad per se, but rather as depressing and disturbing and isolating. Death tends to be sad (and maybe I’m just saying this because I have never died before) because the people, friends, and family are sad over their dying/dead loved one. This book is sad because none of those people are sad. It is sad because they are all inconvenienced. We all eventually have to face the final act of death alone. No one can come with us. But Ivan Ilyich suffers day and night for weeks locked in his room all alone, so when he finally dies it actually liberates him from a loneliness he didn’t have to suffer but did: the pain of abandonment. 5 stars!

Maybe I will tell my friend that the Death of Ivan Ilych is more of a burden than a sob story, then it will surely interest him, right? /s
