This was my first foray into existentialist writing, and I have absolutely no regrets that it was. Tolstoy’s matter-of-fact narrative voice allows the reader to interact with the text in a sort of intrapersonal way, so as to encourage you to draw your own conclusions of the gravity of the events in the novella. I found it both difficult to align with, and dislike the main character, which is a storytelling style I really enjoy. This story gives ample information to kind of dig into Ivan’s personal character and motivations, and it allows you to determine how you perceive the morality of the events through which he lived, and how he rationalised them intrapersonally. tldr; good book, made me think more than I have in a bit but in a good way
