Since I started my historical romance journey back in 2021, I have consistently had people recommend Lisa Kleypas' Ravenels series to me. It seems to be upheld as a gift to the genre and the perfect book to read. I did not find that to be true, unfortunately.
The setup for the book was really fun - it reminded me a lot of if the plots of Romancing Mister Bridgerton and When He Was Wicked were combined. However, I got really annoyed that the author was trying to cram so many plot lines and main characters into one book. Devon and Kathleen were supposed to be the romantic leads, but then suddenly I was getting much more information on Helen and Winterbourne? I get setting up the next romantic pairing for their own book, but it became so much that it felt like this was Helen and Winterbourne's book as opposed to Devon and Kathleen's. It was disappointing because I really liked Devon and Kathleen, but felt like I got next to no time with them. This frustration really dampened my enjoyment of the book as a whole.
