Ultimately, I found this book too boring. Things happen, sure. But I could not care less. Twists that were meant to be shocking are flat and boring. The delivery was, at least. I don't care about any of the characters. I don't care what happens to any of them.
The prose. 68% in and i'm still not used to the way the book is written or the way the characters talk and thin. References aren't explained. I feel like I'm on the outside, looking in, but never really let in.
This book put me in the biggest reading slump!

Gee this was a struggle. I didn't enjoy it and found the language difficult and most of the characters completely unlikeable. Typical award winner, in my experience

The blurb on the back of the book says “Too Much Lip’s language is addictively poetic, it’s cry for social justice real; it’s powered by literary rocket fuel.” Yes, the language is explosive and powerful; the author uses aboriginal words with no explanation and it’s thrilling.

I really loved this book. I picked it up at the library because I have never read anything about indigenous people of Australia and thought it might be interesting. But it’s also funny and tragic and rough and gorgeous.
