I quite enjoyed this book but there were many points where I just wanted to jump ahead a page or two. The fight scenes are clumsy in their descriptions and to be frank, quite boring. Often there were scenes or conversations that felt unnecessary and the pace seemed to stall frequently, the book felt much longer than it was, all of which a good editor should have helped with. There was a good few pages devoted to Paige seeing her father in a cafe, I don't believe that tied in with any of the plot line within this book, there was a lot of talk of a senshield and blocking devices but this wasn't really part of this book's storyline either and these are just a few examples. I'm a little worried, that as part of a seven book series, we are going to end up with some seriously lengthy books. Authors do not have a tendency to shorten their books as a series draws to a conclusion! However, despite this I still got a great deal of enjoyment from this book and found it a good holiday read.

Warden isn’t special, I’d betray everything I know for just a fleeting moment with Paige also

I decided to give this book a shot after really enjoying the world building and characters of The Bone Season but really disliking the romance between Paige and Warden, and I'm glad I did. The romance is still present but it doesn't hang over the narrative like a shadow as it did in the first book. This one spends more time with Paige and the gang she's in, a group of characters that I was really intrigued about and was disappointed we didn't get more of in the first book, and really sinks its teeth into the politics of the London underworld. I also thought it was well paced, and I finished it quite quickly considering how long the book is.

I couldn't put this book down after the first. I read this one in 2 days! It's really easy to lose yourself in.
