I'm going to be honest and say that the first 200 pages or so were a little tiring to read. The pacing felt fairly slow and the book wasn't written with the urgency that Shannon tried to convey purely through descriptions. Even though I knew that Paige was running around like crazy doing super risky stuff, everything seemed so placid. The diction carried this part, while the actual mood felt humdrum. Another major problem I had with the entire book actually, was Paige's ability to be beaten bloody one day and then the next day dive into another dead-defying scene. I understand that great bravery was needed to succeed in this mission, but I'm not sure if it was necessary for Paige to almost die in every single chapter. As unrealistic as this entire book is, Shannon could have at least included a realistic human body for Paige. Yes, adrenaline, but for months? I don't think so. I guess the main problem is the fact that her old injuries never seem to bother her in following encounters. She has this healing broken wrist that she mentions once, but then it never becomes anything of a problem, even though it really should.

Now onto the good part (AKA the next 300 pages). This is where things get interesting. I'll preface with this: if I had the time, I would go back and reread the entire book. There are so many surprises at the end of the book/uncovering of plans, that I'm itching to go back and see all the foreshadowing I missed. That said, it's also slightly annoying that Shannon introduced all these mysteries and complications throughout the entire book and then threw the truth at us in the last 50-100 pages. It makes sense to do this in a book, but the problem is that I got so confused that a lot of the beginning of the book I spent rereading certain parts because I didn't understand a single aspect of a conversation. In general, the foreshadowing seemed too vague and complicated for people to pick up without knowing what happens later. It's okay for a reader to be confused and wanting to understand a mystery, but there comes a point where all the secrets pile up and end up a jumble. I ended up being a passive reader, since I knew I needed Paige to explicitly explain all her findings.

BUT regardless, this book was EXCITING. When all the plans fall into place and you get to see the clear manipulations of all the characters, everything becomes more fun to read. I also appreciate that Paige wasn't all-powerful during the scrimmage. Everyone needs a little help here and there, and finally Paige receives that greatly-needed help. Like I said before, all the revelations were jam-packed into those last few chapters, but wow did almost everything make sense after that. But then, in the very last page of the book, Shannon throws one last curveball that I'm so excited to read about next book! I'd say this is one of the best cliffhangers I've read-a lot to keep you wondering, but just enough to make you satisfied with the ending you got.

I struggled a good deal to rate this book, I did enjoy it a great deal although I had a few troubles with certain characters and their relationships with one another.
I certainly enjoyed the first book more but not by a huge amount, Paige's character grew a lot in this book and the audience got to learn and understand more about the world this series is set in and Paige's life as a "mollisher".
Overall, there were times I thought I would end the series with this book and times I was very much into the story, so for now I will continue the series.

Echt amazing, maar heb het gevoel dat de rest van de serie nog pakkender gaat worden
