“So I let him take my hand. He lifted it high and spun me himself. I glided under his raised arm, and my hair brushed against his waistcoat.”

Okay but besties did your favourite book boyfriend yearn for the FMC so bad that his entire dreamscape is based off where he felt safest..? With her..? No, because he isn’t Arcturus.

•••“It is not that I do not want you. Only that I might want you too much. And for too long”•••

Paige is back and ready to girlboss as usual, this time she’s in her crime queen era. This is personally my comfort book in TBS series and my goooood the romance was romancing - but also would they just bone already?

This book has high stakes but is still fun and you get to see more of Jax (like who doesn’t want more jax).

Reading is subjective but if you didn’t love this book you were wrong

Damn, this book came out 7 years ago?

Wow! My head is still reeling. Admittedly, I somehow managed to put two and together to that cliffhanger, but nonetheless the last 100 pages had so many shocking twists and turns. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the world building. There are so many characters and "sections" in the city and monsters and terminology. Sometimes Paige mentions something new and has to stop and explain it to the reader.

Paige was just a tad bit annoying in the sequel. She would make these reckless decisions that weren't backed by any true logic. Yes, reckless implies bad judgement but for a fugitive with multiple characters wanting to kill her, she took so many unnecessary risks while putting her friends at risk. The first 3/4ths of the book were super slow, but everything came full circle by the end. The only reason I like this series is because of Paige but the backdrop still has a YA dystopian feel circa 2008. Furthermore, I'm not yet sure that I'm invested enough to read all 7 books in a series that only follows one character's POV. Despite my nit-picking, I found this to be a satisfying sequel.

MINOR SPOILER TERRITORY

Now as for the ending. Since it had been several years between the first book and this one, it gave me time to zoom out and read the story with a fresh perspective. Therefore, when it's mentioned again quite pointedly that a human betrayed all the humans several decades prior, my brain unconsciously did some mental math and made a guess to who it might be. The author wrote that line in because it was important for the reader to remember. Why did she want to remind us about the human who betrayed all the other humans? Who else could be so cruel? Who else could be so self-centered? That would explain why they were so calloused toward Paige when she said had to warn everyone. I think I would've been more shook by the Big Reveal if I hadn't waited so long to read The Mime Order after The Bone Season.

The best way to describe this series is Six of Crows meets The Handmaid's Tale.
