It's been a while since I read the first book because I was waiting for the 10th Anniversary Edition to come out and forgetfulness got the better of me.

Having just finished the third book in the series as well, the second entry, The Mime Order, has really been a highlight. I've grown to love the characters in this series a lot and this book goes hard on the inner turmoil and the complicated emotional web between some of the main players.

Currently living near London made me appreciate all the little nods and references to locations in the city as well, and added an additional layer of enjoyment for me. Paige is right, Camden Market to Seven Dials IS quite a walk when you're beat already.

The pacing can feel a little slow in this one but the payoff is so so worth it.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how you write a perfect sequel. I can confidently state this as I sit here, having foregone marking essays for the past 3 hours so that I could finish this book. It simply would not let me go!
I truly loved it and it came across as more balanced and gripping than The Bone Season, which had some dense world-building to be digested in the first half. We get to learn a lot more about the Underworld, its characters and the rules, secrets and machinations of the syndicate. But what's even more enjoyable is seeing Paige's character arc come to a stellar peak. Plus the author really delivered when it comes to the romance subplot. I might just have to proclaim Samantha Shannon as the queen of well-crafted fantasy stories with a dash of heart-warming romance!
