A long, winding novel that follows different generations of two families as they approach each other in Zambia. The novel jumps between a dozen different characters' perspectives, and while most of them are rendered with nuance and empathy, the volume of them makes each one feel less significant. The biggest problem with the novel is there are few true antagonists. Because characters' desires are rarely thwarted by anything other than circumstance, it makes the plot of the book feel like a series of interconnected events moving toward no overarching story or conclusion beyond a landscape portrait of lives through time.
