Star Wars: Darth Vader, Volume 2: Shadows and Secrets by Kieron Gillen

Though I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the first Darth Vader volume, it is still a fair bit above other Star Wars books. Kieron Gillen has a wonderful sense of humor, which he uses to create characters and stories that hover right on the edge of too bizarre. Okay: the Ackbar/Grievous bounty hunter crosses the line toward "too bizarre," but I admire Gillen for even attempting such a weird creation. I'm glad that stories which are this absurd still have a place in the official canon.

A good continuation to Vader and Aphra’s team-up. It was interesting to see them go up against Thanoth. At times it’s almost like everyone knows what Vader is up and are just waiting for him to mess up enough to get caught. Except we know he won’t. So it’s almost moot. But still a nice ride.

This made me a bit emotional at some point and I really enjoyed the characters (especially the droids, they were hilarious), but it took me some time to really get into the story.

The adventures of Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra continue, as they try to gain access to some adiitional funding, and gain information about Luke Skywalker, and Vader's new nemesis Cylo. Vader is assigned another watchdog, but this one is far more competent, and it takes all his skill to try to slip out from his grasp.

It's hard not to enjoy a good scam, especially when you have a competent inspector breathing down your neck. Really I think that the inspector was my favorite part about this book.
