Jolly good fun! I love an improper English lady, and a good mystery
What a fantastic character Veronica is! My only gripe is her not connecting the dots earlier with constant childhood moves and multiple men telling her she is in danger. Stoker is one great protagonist, too!

I have been wanting to get on the Veronica Speedwell bandwagon for a while.
If you like light-hearted books like A Natural History of Dragons or India Holton, hop on.
London, 1887. Veronica Speedwell is an independent, opinionated, strong woman. After almost being abducted, she finds out there may be someone who wants her gone. She’s not too concerned but agrees to protection.
Enter Stoker, an ill-tempered, reclusive natural historian.
Cue travelling circuses, many unravelling secrets, murder, and a woman unscared of her sexuality.
I have heard that this series is MAJOR SLOW BURN. However, you can see the teasing already. Veronica loves to rile Stoker. Stoker is a broody hottie, but doesn’t seem interested in pursuing romance or attraction with anyone.
Veronica as a narrator is very fun. She is forward-thinking and blunt and witty.
”I abhorred weakness of any kind but most particularly in my tea.”
To be honest, I didn’t really like the characters - bossy, kind of a bully, condescending and I wasn’t a huge fan of the plot or mystery. BUT I liked the narrative voice, and the actual narrator of the audiobook.

Veronica speedwell is such a fun character. She is bold, straightforward, always calm, and always logical. This was a very cozy and comforting mystery. I’m such a whore for dramatic mysteries that are zero percent realistic, and this is one of them. I appreciate that Veronica isn’t an amateur detective by profession, it’s just her life itself that is the mystery. I was surprised by how much of this focused on Veronica’s and stoker’s relationship, rather than the mystery. Tbh the mystery of this book is just the characters’ pasts. I liked it though. Stoker and Veronica are perfects compliments of each other.
Very light read. I will definitely be reading the series.
