The novel shows that grief is not a linear process—there is no "right" way to cope. Each character’s experience is shaped by their circumstances and personal histories. For Matt, his journey through grief is about uncovering truths, confronting painful memories, and slowly finding a path toward emotional healing.
The exploration of wrongful conviction is one of the most powerful and emotionally charged aspects of Every Last Fear. The novel dives deep into the idea that justice can be deeply flawed, especially when the criminal justice system fails to protect the innocent. Danny Pine’s case is initially presented as one of a man wrongly convicted of a crime he may not have committed, and the story consistently raises questions about the fairness of his conviction.
The novel also explores how media influence can shape perceptions of guilt and innocence. Danny’s case is highly publicized, and the media’s portrayal of him as a criminal (even before his trial) plays a significant role in cementing public opinion. This mirrors the real-world issue of how media coverage can sometimes make it harder for the public to view a case objectively, especially when there is a rush to judgment.
For me, the book asks important questions about the ethics of such documentaries: Should the media be allowed to shape or influence public perception of an ongoing case? Can the pursuit of entertainment in true crime stories compromise the search for real truth?

Every Last Fear by Alex Finlay would be perfect for someone who is in the mood for :
- Fast-paced and suspenseful, with constant twists and high emotional stakes.
- Rooted in family drama, especially exploring grief, guilt, and sibling dynamics.
- With a true crime feel, ideal for fans of crime documentaries and wrongful conviction stories.
- Tense and atmospheric, featuring small-town secrets and hidden pasts.
- Multi-layered, told through shifting timelines and multiple perspectives that gradually reveal the truth.
The pace for me is best described as fast to moderately fast.
- Fast at the start: The book opens with a shocking revelation—the death of nearly Matt Pine's entire family—which immediately pulls readers into the mystery.
- Moderate in the middle: The pace slows slightly as the story shifts between past and present, filling in background on the family's history and Danny’s imprisonment. These sections build character depth and context but may feel less urgent.
- Fast toward the end: The tension ramps back up as the threads converge, secrets unravel, and Matt closes in on the truth.
Plot-Driven Elements:
- The central mystery—what really happened to the Pine family—is the main engine of the story.
- Multiple timelines and perspectives are used to slowly reveal clues, making it feel like a puzzle for the you to solve.
- Twists and suspense moments are frequent, typical of a thriller that prioritizes pace and tension.
Character Depth :
- Matt Pine is a sympathetic and well-developed protagonist, and his emotional journey dealing with grief, doubt, and unresolved family trauma adds weight to the plot.
- The backstory of Danny Pine (Matt’s imprisoned brother) and how the family became involved in a viral true crime documentary adds depth, but it serves the plot progression more than purely character exploration.
Character Development:
- Matt Pine, the protagonist, experiences real emotional growth. He starts out numb and overwhelmed by tragedy, and as he digs into his family’s past, he confronts difficult truths, guilt over his brother’s case, and complicated memories of his family.
- The Pine family members, especially through flashbacks, are shown with nuance—particularly Matt’s father and Danny—highlighting their motivations, struggles, and how the case affected them over time.
- Danny Pine, though largely absent in the present timeline, is well fleshed-out through others' memories and the documentary’s impact. Readers see the toll of his imprisonment on both him and his family.

Overall, I enjoyed. The pacing of the plot resolution felt delayed and then rushed at the end. The plot was imaginative though. Will read more of AF’s books.

Sad that I figured out who was behind everything about halfway through.
