For the first half of this book, I was bored and mostly laboring out of duty to the trilogy. It was a real slog, though broken at times by beautiful prose—I couldn’t tell what it was supposed to be about. This novel takes an incredible shape by the end. It comes to a fullness of grief in its search for meaning in any place in this world: in family, nation, nature, civilization, religion, community, or self. C.M. holds a tension where he writes things as ultimately empty but of indescribable weight to us anyway, and it makes him so interesting to read. A slow book, but one I’d like to read again sometime with more understanding!
