Not my favorite of the works by Greer. It took me a very long time to get through this book; partially due to a career change, but also because of a lack of relatability in the characters. I found the parts about Lydia the most engaging, and as we moved farther into the book each character seems to open up more and more. I still love Greer as an author, and it was very interesting to see how different he writes from first novel to more recent titles.

In the same way that I am impressed when a man writes in an unusually good female voice, I was overwhelmed at how well Andrew Sean Greer writes in voices of all ages. This book about a group of scientists trying to love (none of them very successfully despite serious efforts) spans almost four decades. Greer does an amazing job of writing the personal thoughts and reflections of everyone from a strange and lonely five year old girl to her eminent father nearing death forty years later. The whole tale is tinged with sadness, but Greer's way of putting together words makes it the loveliest sort of sadness.

I really loved this book. What a wonderful meandering through scientific minds as they flow and fight through love and life through the lens of the stars that they study. I really loved all the characters no matter how flawed or unattractive they became through the turns of the story. I recommend this book!

I really wanted to like this book more...it seemed to have such potential with its stream of cosmic metaphors.

Interesting but so far is not holding my attention. Hmmm.

August 2009: This had to go back to the library un-finished. Maybe another time.
