The various cases that Jesse Stone and gang solved were interesting. But the book had an utter lack of emotion, which bothered me when ongoing characters were killed. Mixed feelings about this book.

This was my first book by Robert Parker. I liked the idea of the book however Parker's writing style kept me from connecting with the characters. To me, it felt like he was following a template from a learn to write book.

Let's see.......did Jesse sleep with 3 or 4 different women during the course of this book? And all while pining away for his ex-wife. This body count distracted me from the story of the real body count, courtesy of a loving couple of serial killers. Honestly, I wished we had learned more about them and their backstories than reading about Jesse and his string of women. I did admire that he was honest with all the women and I liked how he treated the young rape victim. Maybe popping into a series' 4th book is akin to taking bits and pieces out of context? No, I don't think so. Still too many women.

I'm torn for the rating on this one. I decided to go with 3 stars because even though it was a good book, it wasn't a great Jesse Stone story. It was interesting to read, but something just didn't quite work for me. The idea of a pair of serial killers seems a little grand for Paradise. Also, I find Jenn an incredibly annoying character. I love how the TV movie version keep her as just a voice on the phone. It makes their relationship more desperate and tragic. I don't like having her right in Paradise. Character-wise this ended with an interesting development. We'll see what that means for the next book.

Jesse Stone is another of those supermen that Parker is so good at writing. Complex, flawed, and most importantly ethical. Jesse is a drunk, struggling with his addiction and working to solve a murder spree in his New England bedroom community while working to protect a 16 year old rape victim while bringing her rapists to justice. The story is complicated, but well told.
