This book really did a number on me and I couldn't help but put it down a few times and read something lighter to cleanse my poor heart. Matters weren't helped when I read that the inspiration for this book was the author's own grief and coming to terms with the death of his own father.
It's beautifully written, especially the flashbacks to what was, memories of what could have been, the description of different realities and mentions of other words. At the slightest hint of 'god has a plan' or 'you must have faith' or 'god likes playing games and you must make sacrifices' I'm usually rolling my eyes so hard I worry they'll get lost in the back of my head, but somehow Klune manages to tackle tackle the topic of religious beliefs without being too obnoxious. When all is said and done, this is a book about love, loss, grief and selfishness.
On a personal note, I've always wondered if the fact that the person closest to you is a parent or a sibling doesn't make their lose even more painful. After all, you've never experienced what it's like to not have that person in your reality. It's like waking up to find the sky is green- it's just impossible to imagine. There's no 'improbable' about it.

Trying to read all of T. J. Klune's books becuase they are so great! And this one was so different from the stuff I've read from him before. It made me sob and cry becuase it was so damn angsty, my poor heart can't handle it. Love the paranormal aspects and the relationship between Benji and Cal - simply a beautiful love story.

Gonna try to read more books from him! One of my favourite authors.

Absolutely the best fantasy romance I've read, definitely falls on the literature side of the scale. The prose of 'into this river i drown' subtly builds images of it's world in your mind and doesn't once deviate from that world.
The curious mix of religious mythology and same-gender romance shouldn't work, but TJ Klune is able to blend the two together, even touching upon homophobia.
This story is about learning to love in the face of loss and it now holds a little place in my heart.
(Although I did notice he used the word 'palpable' twice. That word is too heavy and rarely used to not stand out when twice in the one novel)

This is so sad...
I thought I knew Klune-sad by now but hooooh boy.
