Okay I know this is fantasy trash, but I loved it.

I've been playing Curse of Strahd in 5e, which has been my ONLY exposure to Ravenloft, and have wanted a better understanding of not only the characters but also these nifty other Dread Realms I've heard about. This gave me more insight into Darkon as well as the Dark Powers of Barovia, and Azalin himself.

Azalin is an absolute MONSTER, well before he goes to Barovia or transcends into lichdom. While the book is about him and his journey, you're not meant to cheer for this guy whatsoever. He is a lot like Strahd in that his own obsessions and refusal to every really acknowledge and rectify his own mistakes is part of his own cycle of doom. He cannot bring himself to change who he is, therefore he is a prime target for the Dark Powers.

If reading about the super bad things a super bad guy does isn't for you, you may want to skip this book. But I found it fascinating to look into the mind of someone so intelligent and so stubborn and his journey into his own damnation.
