Fuck this book. God, I hate this book. I’ve heard this book on tiktok and I expected it to be gorey to the point I would vomit and nothing like that happened. You can tell that Harlan Ellison wrote this in less than a day because nothing made sense. It's written as if he was telling himself the story and honestly, he shouldn’t have published this book in that magazine because this is a disgrace of literature. It’s written like Harlan wanted a way to punish women because making Ellen be the only woman in a group of men was just disgusting and the treatment towards her was repulsive. Ted hates her and says that she wasn’t a virgin and that she’s actually a slut when HE KNOWS THAT AM CHANGES THE WAY THEY ACT for example Benny. Benny isn’t some fucking aminal but AM wanted to torture them and did that, but Ted ONLY has an issue towards Ellen.

All during this SHORT ASS BOOK I had hoped that they killed each other but no Ted decided to stay and let AM torture him because he was an idiot. I get why don’t even try to explain it to me, but God I hated this book. And the fact that people on tiktok took it as AM loved Ted WHEN THE WHOLE POINT IS THAT AM HATES HUMANS…I’m not going to get into it. Harlan just wanted to write gore porn and accomplished it and I wish every copy is burned because this is a disgrace for literature.

The first time I ever read this book I was 14. Reading it again nearly a decade later, it’s still as gripping as it once was. I didn’t read it this time, I listened to the audiobook as read by Harlan Ellison himself and hearing how he reads it is wonderfully fascinating and fully drives the point home how warped and twisted the characters have become at the hands of AM. You feel the cruelty in every breathe, in every word he speaks. It’s so amazing what hearing an author narrate their work can do for that work. And especially when the work is as jaw droppingly well done as this one. Truly a masterpiece, 5/5.

It is a tale that is intriguing, strange, and hopeless. A story that is has the right amount of vagueness to feed into the imagination in the most horrible way. A defeat of humanity, but ending with a sad, small victory.
