Very compelling read—while most of the erotica wasn’t for me (particularly the scenes with the twins, which I found to be a bit too on the nose), I was super taken by the interactions between Dolores and the main character. Overall an interesting interpretation of not only Lacanian mirror theory, but also the inherent narcissism of sex (“there is no ‘sexual relation’”).

“Somewhere along the line, I realized that my desire to chase sensation was just me looking for another way to be consumed. That all I’ve ever wanted was to disappear so thoroughly I might surface as something else, something new, something transformed.”

story of the lacanian i. bataille would be so pleased! in other news, im not sure why im still shocked when i read artsy erotica and it ends up being, you know, erotica. really enjoyed this! i love you lacan (pretentious)

A thrillingly sexy book with a little Lacan in the mix.

Fantasian (2016) by Larissa Pham is the lesbian psycho-thriller you’ve been missing out on. Focussing on an Asian-American unnamed narrator, she falls in love with her doppelgänger. Written with a razor blade, this novel draws you in only to rip your brain apart by the very end of the novel in a cinematic flush. A brushfire read on any easy commute.

I've wanted to read this for aaages and I finally caved and ordered it [exorbitant shipping fees included] and am I glad I did. First of all, it's beautifully published - the purple is excellent, the cover is a velvety matte and it's very compact. Really liked the font too. Secondly, the hype I'd created in my head was deserved. I follow Larissa Pham on twitter and I'm a big fan of her words in general, so this was a real treat.

The plot is basically:

And it's awesome.

I think the way this book made me feel while reading it is more important than its plot/character work etc [although both of those are wonderful]. I felt like when I had it in my hands, I became a different person. The way I was holding it, the way I was turning the pages, the way I thought about it felt alien and strange, but not in an uncomfortable way. It really speaks to the power of it and what you can pack in such a tiny book. Definitely one to reread on multiple occasions and watch as it reveals itself to you, like a dark moon. I will spend ridiculous amounts of money on any future work Pham puts out.

Fantastic story that manages to be fun, bizarre, and incredibly sexy all at once. There's a quick pace to this book that will draw you in, get you to then end, and leave you breathless. I will definitely re-read this a few times.
