I thought I should return to my reading of Rebecca, begun five months ago and paused one month ago at 38%, noticing my heavy feeling as I reached for it.

Du Maurier's writing is wonderful and atmospheric, and if it was all descriptive of the gothic Cornish environs in which she set her story, I'd be happy with that, but I don't give a fig* about any of the characters and really don't care how it ends (which I know, anyway, from film adaptations). So, 👋📔🚮

This is exactly the kind of gothic romance novel that I loved. The whole work as a lonely and uneasy feeling to it as the narrator attempts to find her footing in a world she is unfamiliar in. The twists and turns the plot takes also kept me on the edge of my seat as I rushed to the finish to see what would happen. The angry and spiteful spirit of Rebecca lingers in these pages as well as the tragic glory of Manderley. A wonderful and quick read for anyone looking for danger and intrigue on a country estate.

I’m sorry I know it’s a classic and I really did give it a good try but MY GOD I just couldn’t stand the main female character and Maxim was potentially the worst love interest I’ve ever read (and I love me a broody man okay). I’m so disappointed, I was so excited to start reading this but ultimately my dislike of the two people we spend the most time with lead me unable to get through this novel. The writing is beautiful, wonderfully descriptive writing.
