This was possibly my favorite issue for the series so far. It was so much fun seeing Shuri and Iron Man working together. And their solution was…interesting. It may not have been terribly nice to that one guy…but it’s not like he didn’t deserve it or anything. So I guess they get a pass?
I love the constant struggle Shuri has been having with taking up the Black Panther mantle. I love that she wants to be her own person, while also not wanting to feel like she’s giving up on her brother. Those ideals are in conflict with the ideals of her culture, as well as the requests she’s been getting. It’s been interesting to see the clashing that has occurred because of it.

Come at me, superhero fans, but I don't give a shit about Iron Man. I really don't. So to have him turn up for a large part of this final issue doesn't thrill me. The thing is, it should. I enjoy that Shuri is a scientist - being one myself - and I should love to watch her doing science stuff with another science nerd, and yet I don't. Partly because that other nerd is Iron Man (which, see above) and partly because this mini-series has gone back to action fights over community building, except this time it's a black hole instead of a bug and it's handwavium time to fix it. My interest tanked, and only sputtered back into life when the Egungun (how I love them) turned up at the end to give Shuri some tough love.

Not gonna lie... I would absolutely read a series that was nothing but the Egungun members having a meeting in some random community centre, organising against colonialism and fundamentalism and side-eyeing the quality of the snacks. I'd be more interested in reading that than the continuing adventures of Shuri, to be honest.

The Best Of: Shuri #5

1. Tony Stark and Shuri teaming up to solve a wormhole problem. The MCU never gave us this team up (which, rude), and so I'm glad it at least exists in the comics.

2. The way Shuri's hacker friend Muti managed to hack radio waves, LED lights, and watches to help evacuate the city. I didn't know this was possible, but apparently it is.

3. Shuri completely calling out Moses Magnum's silly name. "Moses Magnum? What kind of name is that? Trying to be pious and a gangsta? Ridiculous."

4. Ororo missing T'challa but preserving anyway because there is shit that must be done and Okoye being a good friend and checking in on her wellbeing. "Are you all right?" "I'm... fine, Okoye. I just miss T'challa. But I can miss him and watch for space monsters at the same time." "I believe you. Just feel better, Ororo."

5. Mansa being comforted by the Dora Milaje and wanting them to teach her moves. Can the Dora Milaje get their own series?

6. Shuri being so done with supervillains. "Ruling the planet is gonna be hard when it's about to be swallowed by a back hole! Wake up, Magnum. Go away and let us work."

7. The man in the audience who said this about Tony Stark: "I trust him only because I think the guy is mostly robot."

8. Shuri not letting anyone bully her into something she doesn't want. "With all due respect, ancestors... I won't be pressured by my mother, the Elephant's Trunk, the media, or you."

9. Shuri meeting once again with her brother's committee.

10. The last page. No spoilers here, but it's an image I'd like on a poster.

Minor villain appears and disappears but it probably won't be the last we see of him. Shuri takes on the Black Panther mantle. Great pacing, great story

This is probably my favorite issue of the series thus far, but I still wish I loved it as much as I thought I was going to initially.

Shuri is by far one of the most interesting characters that Marvel is writing right now, but I wish that she could have figured out the way to get rid of the Black hole without the aid of Tony Stark. I’m excited to see her take up the mantle of the Black Panther again, and hope that we’ll be seeing more of her brains / autonomy in the next arc.
