This was fun, the instalove was a bit annoying but I otherwise really enjoyed the story.
All her books are the same, but I'll be damned if I don't love em!
funny
lighthearted
fast-paced
The story began a little predictably, with Matt & Lizabeth falling into romance quite quickly. However, Smitten overall was a cute story with fun domestic adventures. Reading this particular book after having read the Plum series makes it very easy to see the beginning development of Grandma Mazur and Stephanie Plum. It is refreshing to see how some of Evanovich's most pivotal characters took shape in her early romances such as this one.
I will always have the need for "beach trash" novels to cleanse the pallet. This is one of the simplest books about nothing as you can get. A love story that is so far from reality it can't be anything but "beach trash". But, it was just what I needed to read to relax my brain from other thoughts.
fast-paced
It's hard to say different things about these old romance novels of hers, because they are different situations that end up all the same way. This was cute nonetheless.
On it's own, this book isn't great. It's a romance with mostly poor attempts at comedy. This story features some of my least favorite tropes: insta-love and fake marriage, along with far too much discussion about sex. Granted, this was published 30 years old, so maybe I'm just not impressed by the humor after reading majority of the rest of Evanovich's books. I read that this was the inspiration for the Stephanie Plum series, which I can clearly see in these characters, so for that I finished it and will read the rest of the series.

I didn't enjoy this book quite as much on audio as I did when I read it the first time. While the narrator got some things right (like Aunt Elsie), Lisbeth was more irritating than I remembered her. I think that was in part due to the narrator's voice inflections and delivery. Her delivery made Lisbeth sound more flippant than I'd pictured her. The narrators voice for Matt was well done, and he comes across as a good guy.
While it was done for humorous affect, Matt's tactics with Lizbeth were a bit strong-armed at times. The dog, Ferguson, was also overdone for humor, although I don't find out-of-control animals very funny.
All that said, if you don't over-think the story, it's an enjoyable piece of fluff, worth spending a few hours on for the overall sweet story and the laughs.
