Classic collection of essays published in 1903, written by the first Black graduate of Harvard & a renowned sociologist, with a mix of history and personal experiences. Thoughtful & insightful.

I think the problem I had with this book is that it's not a style I do well reading. There were lots of interesting stories, but there were lots of times that I lost interest and struggled to pay attention.

Wow.
Everyone should read this. If you have any concern about America's current social/political issues regarding the treatment of African-Americans, you need to read this book. It includes information about the Civil War and the Emancipation that I never knew. And it balances fact with personal stories so well. I had to take my time reading this because at the end of every chapter, I felt like I needed time to digest and process what I'd read.
I don't usually write in my books but this is one that I feel like needs to be marked up, highlighted, and post-it notes stuck all over the pages.

Be aware this was written in the early 1900s so they do use the N word throughout. It is a historical book and the author is using language of that time.
