I wasn’t sure what to expect after having watched the ads for the movie. But this book is quite good and only bears a passing resemblance to the film (which I watched shortly after finishing the book). The book is a tale of a woman learning about herself, her place in the world, and her power. Plus … plot twists!

I’ve never read a book where the fantasy is deliberatured ruined in the last 100 pages—but Alasdair Gray does it with such grace that I’m left pondering not only the story, but the meaning of stories, themselves!
