There was a little bit too much sexual content in relation to a relatively young girl for the sake of being "real" or "gritty" for me. Also I started the book yesterday and today I forgot that I was reading it until I saw it sitting on my table. Off putting + forgettable =DNF

The premise of this book is so unique and interesting, I loved the idea of a realistic “magic” system built around words. Emily was a dynamic and complex character who I loved reading about (everyone else was kind of meh). It’s rooted in a lot of real world issues- like the act of persuasion and data mining- which is a commentary on how technology is integrates into society. The question of diversity is indeed a complex one because we aren’t ever really told the race of characters. Eliot might be black. Harry might be aboriginal. It’s impossible to say.
There is some really weird and unneeded sexual violence towards women. The opening scene has nothing to do with the rest of the book and was very much just for shock factor in hopes that you would read on. Dialogue especially in the first half is stale and unnatural.
Eliot deserved way better. His death was so unsatisfying. The end was a little corny with the whole ‘love broke the spell!’ Fairytale ending but I didn’t hate it.
