I was not familiar with Ashley C. Ford prior to reading this book so I really had a fresh take, not knowing anything about her or her background. This is a quicker read but not a light read, as it touches a lot on childhood trauma and navigating home life with a single parent at home while the other parent is incarcerated.
It also heavily focuses on growing up with family around and helping, which I appreciated because I grew up being babysat by my grandma, great-grandma, and great aunt. Ford's explanation of the smells of her grandmother's house really took me back to staying at my great aunt's house.
Favorite Quote: "But in that moment, I felt like someone's little girl. And I'd been waiting a long time to feel like somebody's daughter."

- SOMEBODY'S DAUGHTER is an exploration of not only growing up and finding yourself, but finding your parents, too - the good and the bad parts of them. It's a book about loving difficult people, and holding conflicting parts of yourself and your loved ones at the same time.
- One thing that really stuck out to me is the way Ford illustrates how confusing childhood can be, when you're often punished for breaking rules you didn't know existed and the adults don't give any further explanation.
