One of my favorite Sherlock Holmes' stories (although that may be because I read it so long ago). I listened to the audiobook version and I'm not sure who the narrator was, but he was awesome! So many accents (different British accents, American, cockney, Scottish) and he did them all pretty well. It was great! (I started listening to another Holmes audiobook and I don't know if I can take it, the narration is so bad!) The music between parts was also a nice, creepy touch. On more than one occasion, I found myself walking home at night while Watson was walking across the dark and lonely moor and I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a little more wary than usual.

Although still sexist and racist, because there were no characters from out of the country, it isn't quite as bad (although Stapleton was born in South America and his wife was Costa Rican-although she was portrayed in a pretty positive light...surprise!!). But overall, good story and worth a read!

This book was fun! I thought that the whodunnit aspect was a little predictable (the murderer is the guy who is super suspect the whole time) but the how of it all was still intriguing enough that I felt gripped! And do you know what? They got me. With the hellhound. I was like? Supernatural monsters? in MY Sherlock Holmes? Oh my god! But it was, in fact, not a supernatural monster. Just a very scary dog with some? phosphorous painted to look like flames? Not sure about the chemistry on that one Arthur.

But speaking of, was this the inspiration for the entire scooby-doo series? Because a man literally sets up a supernatural-seeming set of crimes to get his grubby mitts on some real estate. And he would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling middle-aged men!
