This dragged a bit for me. I came to realize eventually this was due to Holmes long absence. There was some pretty overt racism in an early section of the book. Overall mixed feelings. I'll rewatch the Sherlock episode now, though

just didnt gell

While I've watched several takes on Sherlock Holmes, I've not read a single one of the books — until now. And it was more or less what I expected, I guess? The writing in itself isn't all that thrilling, but I do enjoy the character portrayals and the mystery. Unlike Agatha Christie, these are mysteries you can actually figure out if you want to, which gives a different kind of reading experience. Not necessarily better, mind you — I think that depends entirely on what you're after — just different, if we're to compare two infamous mystery writers.

That said, a part of me might still prefer watching Sherlock Holmes over reading about his exploits, simply because I'm a very visual person. I did enjoy Watson's narration quite a lot, however, and the look into how the original Sherlock Holmes actually behaved. It's no secret that more recent interpretations have taken some liberties where his personality is concerned.

My favourite aspect of this book was, by far, the descriptions of the moors and the overall setting. It was quite eerie and set the scene perfectly for a mystery with a bit of a spooky touch.

So yeah! A perfectly fine read (I listened to it being read by Phoebe Judge) though a little dry and unnecessarily bogged down by details at times. Like, I get why the details have to be there, but it sometimes takes what I imagine is entire pages to explain one small clue and that gets tiring in the long run. Still, it's a classic and I understand why.

Olipas tämä varsin mielenkiintoinen ja odottamattomia juonenkäänteitä sisältävä (joskin klassinen valinta) ensimmäiseksi Sherlock Holmes -kirjaksi. Teos on huhtikuun lukupiirikirja, seikka jota ilman en tähän olisikaan varman tullut ihan pian tarttuneeksi.

Parasta teoksessa on ihana luontokuvaus Englannin jylhästä nummiseudusta, joilla jo kivikaudella asuttiin.

Having watched the recent BBC Sherlock series I decided I must be missing out by not reading the books first.

I paused watching the show and picked up this book. It was great. The mystery, the fully realized character, it was all told with a fun flair and a sense of empathy throughout.

Prefer the shorter stories.

This one is a bit too long.
