The only downside for me was the heavy focus on Sam’s religion. I don’t get how she can still be a muslim when she has genuine proof of other gods being real. That by itself contradicts what islam is based on, that their god is the only god, all powerful. Sam is sort of hypocritical in my opinion, I put up with her in the first book, but in this one, she got on my nerves. Despite being a literal valkyrie, I cannot help but feel she looks down on the Norse pantheon, compared to the god she has learned to believe in. If not for that much focus on that aspect, it would have been an easy 5 star book.

Anyway, loved the introduction of Alex Fierro, in my opinion she/he’s exactly how a child of Loki should be. Loved her/his personality so much. I hope I can read more about her/him in the next book, rather than Sam.

I thought the plot of this book was a little silly until I realized it was based off an actual Norse myth about Thor and the giant Thrym. This book also had some amazing characterization: Sam balancing her personal beliefs as a Muslim who is also the daughter of a Norse god; Hearth’s tragic upbringing by ableist parents; and Alex dealing with transphobia in Valhalla. I understand why this book has won a Stonewall Book Award. That being said, I think the titular character fell a little flat for me; it didn’t feel like he affected the plot almost at all and he reminded me of Apollo in The Trials of Apollo series. I also still think this book didn’t need to be connected to Percy Jackson, but we will see what they do with that connection in the last book. This book definitely felt more of a part 1/2 to me and actually kind of ended how I thought the first book was going to end.

I think it's been eight years ish since I read The Sword of Summer?? I can't believe it took me so long to continue the trilogy.

I really enjoyed book 2!! I feel like this is Rick Riordan's peak: genuinely funny, human, diverse, more violent, more mature. The found family trope works so well too, it really is the Magnus Chase trilogy's strength! And, although I'm sure it's not perfect, the efforts on R. Riordan's part to bring diverse representations is much appreciated.
