#readingchallenge2023 (my extra books!)

I really enjoyed the world built; reading about the embraced & the elements of their magic created a fun premise with so much potential. It would have been a stronger read to dive deeper into the politics & societal impacts of the embraced and non-embraced, continuing to explore themes approached by Evie & Quentin’s romance (such as male/female role reversal, self-determination, identity challenging, while looking at morals and motivations) but the book was overall young and naïve.

The novel was a quick, charming read, giving positive feels, but the strength & enjoyment from the beginning of the novel diminished as the romance evolved. The initial ‘discovery’ & chase of the romance was compelling, with butterflies in stomach- desire to read quickly to follow their journey, but once they acknowledged their desires my gosh did the writing become cringe-worthy. The romance began to ruin the ‘adultness’ of the world built by being cheesy and too comedic.

For example, the scene looking at each other naked- with the cringe cringe cringe dialogue of a flacid versus hard penis- the dialogue read like it was written by a ten year old; giving a real drop in quality of the story feeling.

Overall, yes a charming quick read, with a strong storyline, fantastic world built, but ugh reading as an adult the last third of the book really ruins the strength.

But two years ago, he’d realized the hard truth. No matter how fondly the kings and queens might regard him, he was still basically a servant. That meant his feelings would lead nowhere and he was only torturing himself.

So much pining and longing.

Quentin has loved Princess Eviana for years. But he’s a lowborn servant, and she’s so high above him.

After he runs off her suitors in a hilarious way, he accompanies Eviana on an adventure. She sees him in a new light and wants to be with Quentin, but he’s convinced he’s not good enough.

If you’re looking for a funny fantasy that’s got a great sense of humor, you can’t go wrong with Kerrelyn Sparks.

This is a sequel series but it’s not necessary to read before jumping in here. I can’t wait to see who the next book is about.

Note: i have not read any of the rest of the embraced series, and I found the lore easy to follow

A tropey romance with lots of pining, a self-disparaging lead, and a grumpy+ sunshine couple. Plus a character who when touched makes you blurt out your feelings. Hilarity ensues.

There are a few... conservative(?) values sprinkled into this book, that aren't my cup of tea, so I'm posting them here for those interested.

-There is a character that the author makes a point to bring attention to the fact that he likes to dress up like a milkmaid. It is very clear the rest of the cast thinks that this makes him lesser and the author continues to hammer this home when Evie goes on a date with him and he shows her a portrait hall of the women in his family also dressed like milkmaids. The male lead spends a lot of time using it to insult the character as well.

-The main couple also rush to get married before they have sex, so they go from pining and heavy petting to... Marriage, like in a day, and then immediately sex.

Not my cup of tea, but served the purpose I bought it for.

A very intense slow burn lol. Very very good writing though! I think I enjoyed the true backstories of the characters in this one and enjoyed seeing everyone work through their trauma. Would recommend!

You’re getting sleepy, very sleepy!

The Embraced series by Ms Sparks is a great read. When a Princess Proposes is as fun of a read as any of the others. Comedy, intrigue, drama, and even a few murders all make sure you’re never bored.

The narrator for the whispersync version did an amazing job!

I will admit my disappointment in this title even as a third in a series. This read more like a children’s book and not an adult. I have read some titles by this author so this was a surprise. Take out the smexy times and there you go. Just the power that Evie has and how they treated her like she couldn’t control it. It was a struggle to finish.
